On September 7, 2022, the El Segundo Unified School District held a groundbreaking ceremony to kick off construction of the all-new, 7,500-square-foot six-classroom building at Richmond Street School that is expected to be ready for the 2023-24 school year. When completed the building will be the first all-new, permanent instructional building on the school’s campus since the late 1930s.

The $15 million building’s design and selected location will enhance the look, flow, and utility
of Richmond Street School’s campus. The two-story instructional building will be located behind the south wing of the main building and east of the Urho Saari Swim Stadium. It will include three spacious classrooms on each floor with new flexible furnishings, teacher workstations, and audio-visual equipment. Support spaces include separate student and staff restrooms on both floors, custodial rooms, an electrical room, one elevator, and exterior stairs. One classroom on each floor will include a roll-up door that opens to the exterior foyer to accommodate indoor/outdoor learning spaces for students.

“I extend a sincere thank you to our community for coming together for the successful passage of Measure ES,” said ESUSD Superintendent Melissa Moore in her closing statements at the
groundbreaking ceremony of this milestone project. “YOU have made this all possible! Thank
you to ESUSD employees, board members, community leaders, and most importantly to the
voters of the City of El Segundo, for your support of our students at the El Segundo Unified
School District!”
