Band Building

ESUSD is in the initial design phase of an all-new building to house the band program, concessions, and community-based instruction program at El Segundo High School.

As part of the El Segundo Unified School District’s three-year development of its Long-Range Facilities Master Plan published in 2018, the district is in the initial design phase of an all-new building to house the band program, concessions, and community-based instruction program at El Segundo High School (ESHS). The 10,000 square-foot building will be located at the west end of the Football Stadium next to the North Gymnasium and will include the addition of a modest parking lot along Oak Street. Construction is estimated to begin in summer 2022.

“The new building will provide much-needed space for the high school’s music programs,” said ESUSD Superintendent Melissa Moore. “The design thoughtfully incorporates a beautiful and welcoming area that will integrate modern elements into the current campus aesthetic.”

The award-winning ESHS Marching Band has outgrown its current room and accommodation is needed for the addition of the strings program in recent years. The current concession stand, which serves as the primary fundraiser for the junior class, was originally constructed as a temporary facility in the 1980s and now stands in disrepair. Once this new building is completed, the current band room will be used for the ESHS choir and strings programs.

For El Segundo, the high school campus is one of the jewels of the community and this new building is intentionally designed to be a complementary, unified, and functional part of the campus while also creating an inviting threshold for students and visitors during football games. Imagine the ESHS Marching Band and Color Guard making a grand entrance during games from its practice space directly into the football stadium! The building’s design reflects a thoughtful layout for the functions it will serve with the concessions facility and connected shade structure to the south, the more transparent band room in the center, and the community-based instruction room for special education/life skills training for 18 to 22-year-old students on the north side.

The band room will be acoustically appropriate and designed to accommodate up to 120 students with abundant storage for instruments, restrooms, an office, instructional technology, and shade control devices for windows. The community-based instruction classroom will include facilities for life-skills training, restrooms, an office, and a storage room. The concession stand will be the same size as the current building but configured for efficient use of the space with an added shade structure/mingling area for use by students and patrons.

“This complex will provide an excellent learning environment for all of the band students who work so diligently and enthusiastically at producing quality music year after year,” said ESHS Band Director William Flaherty. “It's gratifying to know that both the school district and the community have prioritized resources for the El Segundo High School band program’s growth now and into the future.

Funded by Measure ES, the final design may be modified to accommodate the allotted budget for this project. Please visit the ESUSD website homepage via the “Measure ES” button at www.elsegundousd.net for regular updates about upcoming projects.
