Parent Information / Handbook

Eagles' Nest Preschool Parent Handbook

The preschool serves 3 and 4 year old students in a program designed to help your child grow academically and socially.  One partial day 3-year-old classes, two partial day 4-year-old classes and two full day classrooms for each age group class are available for enrollment.  Programs are tailored to meet the unique development needs of each age group. All instructors use the "Creative Curriculum," a curriculum aligned with the State Foundations for pre-K classes.

Preschool gives students a solid foundation in language, social/emotional skills, physical/motor skills, and cognitive/thinking skills needed to enter TK and kindergarten confidently and successfully.

All staff are highly qualified.  Instructors hold a range of authorizations from Child Development Permits, to full teaching credentials, to Bachelor Degrees in Early Childhood Education.  Each class is staffed at an adult/child ratio of 8 to 1.  All instructional assistants are present during instructional time to maximize individual learning.

The Eagles’ Nest is located at 641 Sheldon Street adjacent to the El Segundo Unified School District office.

Parent Participation & Parent Board

We invite you to become involved in the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), and look forward to asking for your help with different officer positions, committees, and activities during the school orientations meetings in your student's preschool classroom.

The role of the Parent Board is to help support the school in fund raising efforts, to provide parents with information about the ins-and-outs of your student's education, and to learn how to be an effective advocate on behalf of children through local and statewide organizations.   The Parent Board is also intent on helping families socialize around activities such as the annual winter breakfast, spring picnic, and many other celebrations that transpire throughout the year.

PTO meetings provide an opportunity to ask questions, get to know other parents, and be supportive of the efforts the instructors make in the classroom to ensure your child has the richest education possible.

Billing Policies and Procedures Agreement

Preschool tuition is based on costs to fund the program for the entire school year.  Tuition is divided into 10 equal monthly payments for your convenience.   Days missed are not deducted or pro-rated from the tuition because you are paying for your space in the classrooms not days of attendance. We recognize that due to holidays and vacation periods, the number of school days in each month is not equal.  This was taken into consideration when setting Eagles’ Nest Preschool monthly fees.

A one-time, sixty dollar ($60.00) non-refundable application processing fee is required for all new students entering the program.

Preschool tuition is due on the 15th of each month. Checks should be made out to “ESUSD” or “El Segundo Unified School District”.  Payment must be delivered to the green “District Office Drop Box” in the foyer at 641 Sheldon Street, El Segundo, CA  90245 or in the USPS mail by 3:30 pm on the 15th* of every month. If payment is not received in the district office by 3:30 pm on the 15th of the month, it is considered delinquent and a $50 late fee will be applied, per child.  Failure to pay all fees by the 20th of the month will result in dismissal from the program. Please be sure your child’s name and “preschool” are written on the check memo line for a prompt credit to your account.  Also, be sure the check is released from your bank in a timely fashion.  We are not responsible for late post office deliveries.

A thirty-dollar ($30.00) service charge will be assessed on all returned checks.  Payments covering returned checks must be paid by cashier’s check, money order or cash by the 15th or a late fee will also be incurred.  If a second check is returned, you will be asked to make all payments with money orders for the remainder of your attendance in preschool.

ESUSD uses a “green” invoicing system called SmartCare. You may set up Autopay using your online account and will receive a statement via email on the 4th of each month with the amount due on the 15th.  Each child can have two “sponsor” e-mail addresses. Although notifications will go to both email addresses, only the primary account holder will be able to fully access the account. The secondary account holder can view general information and make payments.  Notifications will not be split to accommodate custody arrangements.  An end-of-year statement will be sent in January outlining all recorded payments.

If changing schedules or dropping, four weeks written notice is required prior to your child’s last day of attendance.

If a child is picked up late, there is an additional five dollar fee, per child, for every 5 minutes after pick-up time: 1-5 min=$5, 6-10 min=$10, etc.  You will be invoiced for the late fees on your regular monthly statement.

If the tuition due date falls on a weekend or holiday, then payment must be received by 3:30 pm on the following business day.

Any questions regarding billing can be answered by Ms. Tracy Manning, Program Assistant at (310) 615-2650 ext. 1608 or tmanning@esusd.net

Questions and Concerns

The preschool community works best in a spirit of cooperation and communication. When concerns or questions arise regarding the classroom, it is important that the classroom teacher is approached first, either by phone or email (feel free to cc the Preschool Director at: ggrijalva@esusd.net so a meeting can be scheduled. If the concern continues without resolution, the next step is to discuss the issue with the Preschool Director.

Uniform Complaint Procedures

The Governing Board recognizes that the district has primary responsibility for insuring that it complies with state and federal laws and regulations governing educational programs. The district shall investigate and seek to resolve complaints at the local level.  The district shall follow uniform complaint procedures pursuant to state regulations and civil rights protections when addressing complaints alleging unlawful discrimination regarding ethnic group identification, race, ancestry, national origin, religion, color, sex, sexual orientation, or physical or mental disability in any program or activity that receives or benefits from state financial assistance.  More information on Uniform Complaint Procedures may be obtained from the district office in the Uniform Complaint Procedures brochure or by visiting the web site at: El Segundo USD - Human Resource Department

Potty Training Policy

Children are required to be fully potty trained in order to enroll. We do not allow children to come to school in pull ups. We understand that accidents do happen on occasion and expect them as students first enroll into Eagles' Nest. After the initial grace period, each time a child has an accident the parent will be notified. On the third accident we will ask that the child be removed from the program until they are fully potty trained and ready to join us again. The Preschool Director will address concerns on a case by case basis.

Calendar

The preschool will follow the El Segundo Unified School District Calendar.  The preschool schedules one pupil free week in February so instructors have an opportunity to schedule one-on-one conferences with parents to discuss in depth each child’s progress over the course of the year.  Please make other arrangements for child care during that week. The Eagles' Nest Preschool PTO also schedules a partial day camp for the teacher conference week to help with child care when a vendor can be secured.

Authorization to Pick Up Your Child

Only those persons listed on a child’s emergency notification sheet or those who have written permission signed by the parent or guardian on file with the teacher will be allowed to sign a child out of preschool. This policy is in place for the protection of every child.  During the first few days of the program, a picture identification will be required when picking up your child.  Any person on the emergency notification sheet should be prepared to show a picture identification when they enter the facility.  Staff members will question anyone who they do not recognize and will check the child’s emergency sheet for authorization before releasing a child.  Parents and guardians are responsible for updating emergency information as needed.

Signing In and Out

Sign in sheets are legal documents required by the State of California.  Whenever dropping off or picking up a child from preschool, a responsible adult must go into the facility and sign the child in and out with a full signature and date on the daily sign in/out sheet.  No child is to be dropped off without a parent/guardian signature.

Professional Staff Responsibilities

The California Penal Code provides that preschool employees MUST report suspected child abuse.  Failure to report suspected child abuse by a mandated reporter within thirty-six (36) hours is a misdemeanor punishable by six months in jail and/or a $1,000 fine. Preschool staff participate in Child Abuse Reporting training annually.

Disaster Preparedness Program

Preschool children will participate in the School District’s disaster preparedness program and the annual California Great Shake Out earthquake drill. Emergency information for each student is kept on file in the classroom and a copy is kept in the Preschool Director’s office.  In the event of a major disaster students will be kept at school until picked up by parents or an authorized designee. If we need to relocate then we will move to the El Segundo High School football field and parents can pick up students at the release gate on E. Oak Avenue. Release protocols will be followed to release the children to the appropriate persons.

Health and Safety Policies and Procedures

What Should a Parent Do if Their Child is Absent?

Call or email your classroom teacher to report the absence. The Preschool Director can also be notified and the message will be shared with your child's classroom teacher. For the protection of your child and other children, please keep your child at home if he/she is sick (Fever, Diarrhea, Vomiting).  Please let us know if your child has a communicable disease or virus such as covid-19, strep throat, pink eye, or lice so that we can alert other families. If your child has had a rash or infectious disease a doctor’s note is required before returning to school.

What Happens When a Child Becomes Ill At Preschool?

If a child becomes ill while at preschool parents/guardians will be contacted.  When a parent/guardian is notified that his/her child is ill, the child must be picked up within the hour. If the parent/guardian is not able to be reached then we will begin to contact the people listed under the authorization for release to coordinate pick up.

Medication

Medication will not be dispensed at the preschool unless there is a doctor's note and the school district nurse has reviewed the medication and dispensing instructions. We don't have any over the counter medications to dispense to students if they develop a fever while in school.

What happens if a child is injured at preschool?

The parents will be contacted immediately.  If the injury is severe the school personnel will call 911.  A detailed injury report will be sent to the District Office and an Ouch Report will be given to the parent/guardian at pick up time.
