El Segundo High School is an exemplary institution recognized as a Top 100 School by U.S. News and World Report, and ESUSD has achieved the highest graduation rate in the region at 98.9 percent, which far exceeds the state’s average graduation rate of 83.2 percent.
Last year, more than 300 students, parents and community members attended the event designed to encourage middle school students to explore the many hands-on educational experiences and innovative curriculum available at El Segundo High School intended to marry academic coursework with real-world projects. “To create a college-going and career-exploring culture, it is important to encourage students and families to start thinking about higher education in middle school,” said ESHS Principal Jennifer Hawn. “We want families to experience all that El Segundo High School has to offer well before it is time to register for freshman year.”
The Open House will begin with a welcome address and brief state of the school by Principal Hawn. Attendees will then be invited to take tours of the school in groups on an adventurous path with stations run by current ESHS students offering up information about the various academic departments, career exploration pathways, athletics, and student clubs and organizations.
ESHS created four pathways in 2012 to motivate and engage students by connecting challenging academics to in-demand Career and Technical Education. Students may opt in as freshman to four pathways: Business, Engineering, Biomedical Science, and Visual and Performing Arts (fine art, photography, graphic design, drama, screenwriting, music and choral arts).
Students may enroll in a pathway during registration and may try a pathway for one year, and choose a different pathway the following year if their original choice does not meet their future goals or interests.
ESHS also offers a robust Athletics Program with ten sports each for boys and girls, including: football, baseball, basketball, tennis, soccer, softball, cross country, track, swimming, water polo and lacrosse.
The El Segundo Unified School District is building a better future together with its many partners including the El Segundo Educational Foundation, which funds programming that most public schools are not able offer; PTA organizations that raise funds for addition student programs; industry partnerships and local sponsorships; and strong community partnerships.
“We know that technology is a connector for all college and career plans and we want to ensure that ESHS students have the most innovative curriculum to prepare them to be socially impactful and productive citizens,” said Hawn. “We look forward to seeing many students and families at the upcoming ESHS Open House!”
