Each team qualified for the CIF prelims and the both teams advanced to the CIF finals in Fresno on November 25, 2017. Only 90 teams make it to this level in all of California across five divisions. “To say it is extremely difficult to make it to CIF State Championships is a massive understatement,” said Coach Marcos Bolanos. “The ESHS student-athletes really dedicated themselves this season to making their goal a reality. As a coach, I continue to be amazed by their dedication, camaraderie and work ethic.”
At the CIF State Championships, both teams placed in the top 10. The girls’ team improved from the previous year with a 7th place finish, and sophomore girl James Matlosz setting a new school record with a time of 18:46.3 and placing 13th overall. The boys’ team finished in 9th place and the second fastest time (16:47) in school history run by senior co-captain Garrett Rifkin.
“The teams continue to pursue loftier goals each season, and have already set their sights on a top three finish in 2018!” said Coach Bolanos. With a number of juniors and sophomores on each of the teams, the future looks bright for the Eagle Cross Country program.
