Their steadfast commitment and dedication has had a profound impact on ESUSD students and families.
At the beginning of 2021, the El Segundo Kiwanis Club introduced the new community discount card to help local businesses, organizations, and residents ease the economic effects of the pandemic. Kiwanis Club member Jeff Wilson, who is a resident and local business owner, conceived the idea for the discount card as a way to give back. “The idea came to me when I began to ask myself, 'how can we do something that can help everyone so that it is a win-win-win?' and the card was the answer," said Wilson.
Wilson set a personal fundraising goal of $10,000 through sales of the discount cards. He contacted the team at Chevron to see if they wanted to purchase some cards. “They really stepped up!" said Wilson. "Chevron loved the idea of giving back to the community, and they purchased cards for the entire El Segundo Unified School District. Their generosity is a testament to how important helping the community can be both financially and by lifting morale.”
The $20 El Segundo Community Discount Card offers unlimited use of discounts at local stores, services, and eateries for the remainder of 2021. It's the size of a credit card, making it easy to carry. This card saves the holder money and brings in customers to local businesses. As an added bonus, the proceeds collected will help Kiwanis fund youth programs and scholarships right here in El Segundo. “This promotion has had so many great benefits,” said Michael Earley, president of the El Segundo Kiwanis Club. “Not only are we helping out local merchants, but it is a win for card holders and the youth in El Segundo. A great side benefit is that many people are learning more about our Kiwanis mission to help our kids locally and abroad.”
