Dear ESUSD Families, Staff and Community,
The purpose of this communication is to share outstanding news regarding our Transitional Kindergarten through Second Grade (TK-2) Waiver. Thursday afternoon, I received notification that the applications for Center Street and Richmond Street Schools for a TK-2 waiver were approved! These approvals will allow students in TK-2 who did not choose the full distance learning option to return for in-person hybrid instruction. I would like to share my gratitude to the organizations that provided their steadfast support:
- El Segundo Teachers Association and California School Employees Association & Its Chapter #71
- Parent Teacher Associations at Richmond and Center Street Schools
- City of El Segundo
- El Segundo Chamber of Commerce
- El Segundo Education Foundation
I am thrilled that our thoughtful preparations and our health and safety protocols met the comprehensive requirements set forth by the County and the State. In addition, the TK-2 teachers and students specifically participating in distance learning will continue participating in this high-quality program remotely and parents of distance learning students will have an opportunity to revisit the decision to return to hybrid instruction or remain on distance learning in January. As I have previously shared, there are logistical issues that we must work through with employees and parents alike. For example, if you are a parent of a TK-2 student, please look for a brief survey that will assist the school district with planning our youngest learners return. More information will be forthcoming next week and please save the date for a Town Hall regarding the TK-2 reopening Tuesday, November 17 at 5:00 pm.
In closing, it is quite noteworthy that ESUSD is one of a select few public school districts in Los Angeles County to have school waiver applications successfully approved, alongside Manhattan Beach, La Canada and Las Virgenes. We remain hopeful that in the best-case scenario, our projected start date will likely be Wednesday, December 2nd, but stay tuned.
Elementary schools have parent conferences scheduled the week of November 16th, which is followed by the scheduled break the week of November 23rd. I look forward to implementing this phase of our return to school plan and I thank you all for your patience and tremendous support. We continue to strive towards increasing opportunities for our students to return to school safely.
With gratitude that we are in this together,
Melissa Moore, Ed.D.
