Board of Education Approves Three New Inductees into the El Segundo High School Hall of Fame

The El Segundo High School (ESHS) Alumni Association recently welcomed three new honorees into the ESHS Hall of Fame: John Van Hamersveld (Class of 1959), Sandra (Garrard) Jacobs (Class of 1960), and Dawn (Keeney) Shaughnessy (Class of 1989). An induction ceremony was held for students, faculty, and invited guests on October 26, 2017 at the El Segundo Performing Arts Center. Click headline for more.

What Happens When Students Combine a Pumpkin with a Good Book? Richmond Street School Sparks Creativity with Literacy O’Lantern Contest

With the goal of promoting a genuine love of reading and inspiring discussions about books, Richmond Street Elementary School held it’s first Literacy O’Lantern Contest. Students were invited to use their imaginations to create a book character on a pumpkin or gourd. Submissions were collected in mid October and displayed in the school library with the corresponding book. Forty-seven students and four staff members turned in creative lanterns from popular books including Harry Potter, Pinkalicious, Captain Underpants, Where the Wild Things Are, Pete the Cat, and a lineup of other favorite characters. Renee Hoover Named LA County Teacher of the Year

Renee Hoover is a second grade teacher at Center Street School who has been named a 2017 Los Angeles County Teacher of the Year by the county’s Office of Education. She is among sixteen educators, from a pool of more than 72,500 teachers in Los Angeles County, who were recognized at a banquet on September 29. Teachers of the Year are selected for their exemplary dedication, compelling classroom practices, positive accomplishments and professional commitment. She is now eligible to advance to the California State Teacher of the Year competition. Click headline for more.

Two El Segundo High School Students Awarded Prestigious Paul Marchisotto Scholarship; Five Students Graduate from Northrop Grumman’s High School Involvement Program

Rachael Wang and Kristine Shen of El Segundo High School were two of the five students selected by Northrop Grumman from a talented pool of applicants from across the country to receive the Paul Marchisotto Scholarship this year. The annual scholarship awards $1,500 to each winner and honors the late vice president who worked for Northrop Grumman for 20 years before he passed away in 2006.

Grace Long Named Assistant Principal for Center Street School

At the El Segundo Unified School District (ESUSD) Board of Education meeting on July 11, 2017, the Board appointed Grace Long as the new assistant principal for Center Street Elementary School.

Dr. Jennifer Tedford Named Principal of El Segundo High School

At the El Segundo Unified School District (ESUSD) Board of Education meeting on June 13th, the Board appointed Dr. Jennifer Tedford as the new Principal of El Segundo High School. Dr. Dylan Farris reported the hiring process included paper screening to identify highly qualified candidates, two rounds of comprehensive interviews with panels reflective of all stakeholders, a finalist interview, a comprehensive reference check, and a validation visit to Dr. Tedford’s current school district. For the validation visit, an ESUSD team met with close to 38 individuals who shared firsthand the significant positive impact Dr. Tedford directly had on the lives of students, faculty, parents, and the community-at-large. In the end, Dr. Jennifer Tedford was unequivocally the best selection to lead El Segundo High School. Click headline for more.
