Two El Segundo High School Students Awarded Prestigious Paul Marchisotto Scholarship; Five Students Graduate from Northrop Grumman’s High School Involvement Program

Rachael Wang and Kristine Shen of El Segundo High School were two of the five students selected by Northrop Grumman from a talented pool of applicants from across the country to receive the Paul Marchisotto Scholarship this year. The annual scholarship awards $1,500 to each winner and honors the late vice president who worked for Northrop Grumman for 20 years before he passed away in 2006.

Grace Long Named Assistant Principal for Center Street School

At the El Segundo Unified School District (ESUSD) Board of Education meeting on July 11, 2017, the Board appointed Grace Long as the new assistant principal for Center Street Elementary School.

Long joins ESUSD after a 16-year tenure at the Lawndale Elementary School District as an elementary school and middle school teacher. Click headline for more.

Dr. Jennifer Tedford Named Principal of El Segundo High School

At the El Segundo Unified School District (ESUSD) Board of Education meeting on June 13th, the Board appointed Dr. Jennifer Tedford as the new Principal of El Segundo High School. Dr. Dylan Farris reported the hiring process included paper screening to identify highly qualified candidates, two rounds of comprehensive interviews with panels reflective of all stakeholders, a finalist interview, a comprehensive reference check, and a validation visit to Dr. Tedford’s current school district. For the validation visit, an ESUSD team met with close to 38 individuals who shared firsthand the significant positive impact Dr. Tedford directly had on the lives of students, faculty, parents, and the community-at-large. Arena High School Student Receives ‘Every Student Succeeding’ Award

Tenth grade student Jespa Awomah was honored with an “Every Student Succeeding” award by the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA).

The Every Student Succeeding Award recognizes students at all grade levels who have succeeded against all odds, beyond expectations or simply won the hearts of the administrators and educators who helped them achieve their goals. Click headline for more.

2017 Senior Awards Honor Outstanding Students

Each year, the culmination of El Segundo High School and Arena High School students’ academic, athletic, philanthropic and extracurricular achievements are celebrated and recognized during the annual Senior Awards Night ceremony. For 2017, El Segundo High School students were awarded 69 different scholarships totaling $112,500, and Arena High School students were awarded 10 scholarships totaling $11,300! The scholarships are donated by many local individuals, families, businesses and organizations, and the El Segundo Unified School District (ESUSD) is extremely grateful for the community’s generous support of ESUSD students!

El Segundo High School Students Win Second Place at Herndon Science Competition

A team of five El Segundo High School (ESHS) engineering students were awarded second place in the 40th annual Herndon Science Competition in May at The Aerospace Corporation in El Segundo. The competition, hosted by The Aerospace Corporation and U.S. Air Force, invites students to identify an engineering problem and then research, design and build a solution, ultimately presenting their solutions and prototypes to two panels of judges comprised of engineers and scientists. This year, the ESHS students challenged themselves to create a device designed to keep a specific plant alive during a six-month trip to Mars without human interaction. Click headline for more.

El Segundo High School Senior Gillian Cornwall Wins Women’s Aspirations in Computing Award

El Segundo High School senior Gillian Cornwall was recently honored with an Aspirations in Computing Award from the National Center for Women & IT (NCWIT) at the LA and OC Metropolitan Affiliate’s award celebration. The award not only recognizes IT skills and computing knowledge, but also solid leadership ability, excellent academic history and plans for related post-secondary education.
