Dr. Tedford has 22 years experience serving a broad span of students K-12 primarily in the Beverly Hills Unified School District and a brief period in Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District. She began her career as an English teacher for 13 years and also served as department chairperson. She worked in administration since 2008, serving as an assistant principal, principal, and chief academic officer. She has considerable expertise in the areas of instruction and curriculum.
Dr. Tedford earned her Doctorate Degree in Educational Leadership from University of Southern California. Her Master’s Degree is in Teaching English from Loyola Marymount University. She earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from Cal State University, Los Angeles while overseas.
During her tenure as an academic program administrator, academic achievement in Beverly Hills Unified increased and significant school recognitions were earned, including California Gold Ribbon School recognitions and Schools to Watch designations in 2015. She has presented at numerous professional conferences, including the 2017 Lead 3.0 Symposium and 2015 California Department of Education STEM Conference. Her achievements are directly aligned with the ESUSD vision and goals.
Dr. Melissa Moore, Superintendent shared, “Dr. Tedford clearly demonstrated a successful track record working inclusively with stakeholders towards a common vision while working with a process that is grounded in transparency and integrity. Her expertise with research-based best practices in the areas of instruction serve as an asset in her ability to effectively collaborate with faculty to advance student achievement. I sincerely believe she is the right leader at the right time to serve as principal at El Segundo High School.”
Dr. Bill Watkins, ESUSD Board of Education President, said, “We are honored to have Dr. Jennifer Tedford join our administration as the principal at El Segundo High School. Her background as a teacher and her knowledge of education will benefit all of our students at ESHS. Her administrative background in Santa Monica USD and Beverly Hills USD will benefit our whole community of students and staff.”
In her free time, Dr. Tedford serves as an adjunct professor at Pepperdine University and as a Board member for the Good Entertainment Foundation whose work promotes good health, and advancements in science and technology. However, her first joy is spending time with her husband, Andrew Hawn and their two children. Dr. Moore welcomes Jennifer Tedford to her new role and is confident she will lead El Segundo High School in the service of students, teachers, staff and community.
About the El Segundo Unified School District
The El Segundo Unified School District (ESUSD) was established in 1912 to serve all of the residents living in the City of El Segundo and covers the western part of the city. ESUSD consists of six schools including the Eagle’s Nest Preschool, Richmond Street and Center Street Elementary Schools, El Segundo Middle School, El Segundo High School and the Arena/Virtual High School, as well as partnerships with the South Bay Adult School and California Regional Occupational Center (SoCal ROC).
