Dr. Plotkin has 18 years experience serving a broad span of students K-12. He began his career as a high school and middle school special education teacher for seven years. He has worked in administration for ESUSD since 2007, serving as coordinator of pupil services, assistant principal for El Segundo Middle School and Richmond Street Elementary School, before being promoted to principal of the middle school in 2011.
Dr. Plotkin earned his Doctorate in Educational Leadership from UCLA and his noteworthy dissertation is entitled, Making College a Reality: A Transition Services Collaboration for Students with Disabilities. He has two Master’s Degrees; one in Educational Administration from Pepperdine University and a the second degree in special education from the National University with his thesis topic project; Conquering the Block: Analyzing Class Schedules for Students with Special Needs. He earned bachelor’s degrees in foreign affairs and Spanish also from the University of Virginia.
During his tenure as principal of El Segundo Middle School, Dr. Plotkin was named the Middle Grades Principal of the Year by the Association of California School Administrators Region 14 in 2016, brought to fruition the ESUSD Board of Education’s goal to achieve an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, as well as earned the middle school the California School Board Association’s Golden Bell Award and designation as a California Gold Ribbon School by the California Department of Education.
“Dr. Plotkin is uniquely qualified for this position as he not only possesses a depth of knowledge of special education and research-based intervention, but he has strongly promoted innovation in digital learning for our teachers through personalized professional learning and expanding digital learning opportunities for our students as well.” Moore explains. “His leadership facilitated the establishment of El Segundo Middle School's culture into an esteemed and award-winning middle school with the academic achievement, growth, and social development of its students as its core priority. I look forward to Dr. Plotkin infusing innovation practices district-wide for all students."

In his free time, Dr. Plotkin serves as a guest lecturer at Loyola Marymount University and as an Alumni Fellow at UCLA. However, his first joy is spending time with his wife Celia and two daughters. Dr. Moore welcomes Jack Plotkin to his new role and is confident he will continue to make a difference in the lives of our students in El Segundo.
About the El Segundo Unified School District
The El Segundo Unified School District (ESUSD) was established in 1912 to serve all of the residents living in the City of El Segundo and covers the western part of the city. ESUSD consists of six schools including the Eagle’s Nest Preschool, Richmond Street and Center Street Elementary Schools, El Segundo Middle School, El Segundo High School and the Arena/Virtual High School, as well as partnerships with the South Bay Adult School and California Regional Occupational Center (SoCal ROC).
